The purpose of this critical media toolkit is to inform and equip global grassroots advocates who are engaged in media response to HIV criminalisation–and to demystify the practice of working with, and through, media to change the conversation around criminalisation. The toolkit provides an introduction to the topic of HIV criminalisation and the importance of engagement with media to change narratives around this unjust practice. It also features a number of case studies providing examples of how media played a significant role in the outcome, or the impetus, of HIV criminalisation advocacy. In addition, the toolkit includes reporting tips for journalists, designed to educate writers and media makers around the nuances of HIV criminalisation, and the harms of inaccurate and stigmatising coverage.
Phylogenetic analysis as a forensic tool in HIV transmission investigations
A review of HIV court case investigations published in the scientific literature, as well as the methodological aspects important for the application and standardisation of phylogenetic analyses methods as a forensic tool. Concludes that there has been a lack of consistency between methods and that it is essential to define guidelines to be used by phylogenetic forensic experts in HIV transmission cases.
HIV Criminalisation Defence Case Compendium
This HIV Criminalisation Defence Case Compendium aims to support lawyers acting for those who are alleged to have put others at risk of HIV. Based on research conducted in late 2017, it includes criminal cases from all over the world where strong defence arguments have resulted in an acquittal or reduced penalty for persons living with HIV who have been accused of HIV exposure, non-disclosure or transmission.
The Compendium is not intended to be comprehensive. It has been developed as a resource for a training of lawyers from Africa – “Lawyers for HIV and TB justice: Strategic litigation, legal defence and advocacy training” – held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 20-23 February 2018.

An analysis of the notorious Canadian criminal case of Johnson Aziga. The article outlines five key ways that people living with HIV who do not disclose their status to a sexual partner are characterised as dangerous by both the criminal justice system and the media.
HIV and AIDS Faith Advocacy Toolkit
Drawing upon a wide literature on HIV, religion, and advocacy, this toolkit aims to equip and inspire people to use the strength of their faith communities to advocate for the achievement of universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support. It contains a background on faith-based advocacy and HIV, a guide to planning advocacy campaigns, an overview of universal access, and additional advocacy resources. The toolkit was prepared as part of the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance’s HIV and AIDS campaign “Live the Promise,” based on the knowledge that churches are living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. The campaign aims to hold individuals, governments, religious leaders, and faith organizations accountable for the commitments they have made and be advocates for further efforts and resources to respond to HIV and AIDS.

This toolkit, produced jointly by the Alliance and the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO), shows NGOs and CBOs how they can use advocacy to influence people in power, to create an environment that protects the rights, health and welfare of everyone, whether HIV positive or negative. It sets out to build practical skills, provide a training resource and continue learning.
Judging the epidemic: A judicial handbook on HIV, human rights and the law
Prepared as a resource to help judges, magistrates, arbitrators and other judicial officers throughout the world adjudicate cases involving HIV-related issues. Based on international legal and human rights standards, the handbook contains examples of decided cases from different jurisdictions, good-practice advice and judicial rulings on HIV-related issues.
